When we walk along the streets, we always have our keen eyes fixed at the posters nailed everywhere. Often times we also meet strangers giving us leaflets, throwaways, handbills, and flyers for the promotion of their products and services. And especially during election times, we get papers here, there, everywhere – but do we really read them and acquire the 100% information what the paper has to say to us? Or the other way around which just junk them or throw them anywhere?
Publicity helps disseminate information about facts of a particular event or person. In business it is termed “advertising”. It has been a big income-generating form of business ever since the creation of media. It greatly contributes, affects to the credibility, name and status of a company. But there’s no big argument on whether publicity and advertising must be stopped. The “HOW” is the issue.
In televisions and radios common advertisements and publicity are heard with no problems because they’re just “air”. Contrary to that situation is rendered in papers. We utilize and waste papers for ads like job hiring, shows, information etc. And these papers are considered junks and garbage before they even touch our hands.
According to The Daily Green, about 42% of the industrial wood harvest is used to make paper. Imagine. After that paper wastes contribute to 25% of landfill. It’s not bad if they went for books, company paper-works, newspapers, asses etc. and be thrown away for they have already met their uses in a purposive way.
But how about those who are just thrown for no reason but a waste of attraction?
I’m not a good citizen in terms of knowing the ordinances of this city. I admit I have no law degree. But as long as there is the freedom of speech (as we call it), I am free to express my ideas that will contribute to lessen the damage of our environment. I know that there’s an ordinance that prohibits and penalize the throwing of garbage anywhere in public places. But to be more specific, THERE SHOULD BE A LAW THAT PROHIBITS AND PENALIZE THOSE EVERYWHERE-POSTED AND EVERYONE-GIVEN PAPER CRAPS WITHOUT A PROPER PERMIT FROM A GOVERNMENT OFFICE – or should I say THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES (DENR) for this country. Maybe there is but not working like the former one said.
Another is businessmen are taking advantage of this situation. Instead they support the local media for advertisements as the bread and butter; they’re the one who make themselves the medium for their advertisements. It’s not bad to cost-cut but due to “freedom of messiness” they can post here and there, flyers to everyone. Worse especially when they dispose it during their motorcades like dropping twenty to thirty copies on the road. Few read them. They’re saving money and making garbage.
Worst happens during election times. Political candidates don’t have to tell their redundant, never-ending, promising story. The flyers do – which later go to trash bins. They can list all the lies they could think of there. Oh, by the way, they give works for volunteers and generate income (good one) which biased the votes (bad one). This shows that even before they’re not on their seats, THEY’RE MESSING UP. Shame!

In the end, I don’t have the power to do the legalizations of my so-called “idea for clean and green environment”. But to be honest for myself, I should be doing what I want others to do as well. What I see is the reality for me. I’m bashed with this reality so I’m expressing it.
Hey let’s wake up. They mess the environment of our own and beloved City of Golden Friendship, Mindanao and the entire Philippines. Even recycling helps to recover those papers back for usage but only part of those wastes are reprocessed. I am pleased to think that recycling has done its part to help our environment.
