I don’t know how I got into environmentalism and the interest in recycling and reusing. I think it was because of my interest also in cutting and gluing artsy stuff and pieces from old magazines. Then it went on a higher level: using scratch papers to second use (maybe even third, fourth…). And so began the interest in recycling.
Not many people are concerned about the environment. How can I tell? Just by noticing my surroundings, I could somehow infer it because garbage is not properly displaced to where they belong—trash bins. Is it so hard to simply throw them? Perhaps there lies the problem. Not all even care if the trash shoots into the bin or not, as long as they threw the trash. Consequently, not all plastics, papers, and other scrap would fall into the garbage can. Maybe shooting two- or three-pointers will push some to.
So where do some people shoot their two- and three-pointers? Nowadays, fashion, music, and media entertainment top the list of hobbies, fads and interests of people, mostly teenagers. I’m not saying, though, that people should leave those behind, pay full attention and put their energies in these saving-the-earth advocacies. Why not put the interest and the advocacy
together?
Who says we can’t save the world while we shop, dine, travel and other to-do’s to enjoy life? Going green itself can be a hobby. Wherever people may be, going green will color their footsteps. In their bedrooms, as they organize and clean, perhaps old coin banks could be used for something else, like a pencil-paper-clip holder. At home, conserving and recycling could be done when they want to make birthday cards, or have-a-nice-day notes, and cleaning out shelves.
It’s good that in between shows or commercials are reminders to turn one’s community green, such as in 2nd Avenue. SM Supermarkets are also giving out and encouraging the use of what they call “green bags.”
I do believe that we can save the planet. Here is probably one of the ways we could see the phrase “in the littlest things we do” come to life. Our hobbies and interests may be like the “little things we do” because we do them frequently. Yet, if we customize our hobbies into earth-friendly ones and do them frequently, that's already saving the planet everyday! You see my point?
Isn't it nice that we not only do things we are passionate about and fond of, but also save our planet, our lives? That's like hitting two stones at one time.
Paint hobbies green by helping save the planet with where your interests lie.
